IT systems engineer currently based in London. Outside of work, you'll usually find me outdoors, on a mountain, in the water, or wherever the next trip is heading.
I'm a Swiss IT systems engineer currently based in London. Most of my career has been in enterprise infrastructure for public sector and cultural organisations: servers and networks across municipal sites for the City of Uster, then systems and operations at Kunsthaus Zürich, Switzerland's largest art museum. Different buildings, same instinct: fix it before anyone notices it broke.
Outside of work I spend a lot of time outdoors, hiking in the Alps, snorkelling around reefs in Indonesia, and skating around Zürich on an electric longboard. I also went paragliding over the Alps once, which I'd happily do again.
A few years ago I spent several months in San Francisco studying English and picked up a Cambridge C1 certificate, with detours to Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, and Las Vegas along the way. I came back with better grammar and a longer list of places to see again.
At home I paint, grow chillies to get them as hot as they can get, and cook foor for myself and the ones i love. I'm also a steady reader, and I keep tabs on a few open source projects. I go to Museums when I get the chance, and love to watch Movies on weekends.
Career
Roles in IT systems and infrastructure, starting from an apprenticeship.
Mar 2021 – Mar 2026
Kunsthaus Zürich · Full-time, 90-100% · Zürich, CH
Part of the team providing first, second, and third line support across Switzerland's largest art museum, managing ticket workflows and escalations to outsourcing partners and change orders. Worked on infrastructure projects including the Chipperfield extension build-out in 2021, coordinating installation and maintenance of servers, operating systems, databases, and network components. Wrote technical documentation and delivered staff training, and administered Veeam Backup & Replication across disk and tape.
"Stefan Bopp consistently delivered excellent performance that met our high expectations. He grasped complex tasks with remarkable speed, thoroughness, and ease."
Kunsthaus Zürich, March 2026Mar 2019 – Feb 2021
Personal time · Travel & Exploration
Time off, on purpose. Travel, a few personal projects, and enough distance from server rooms that I actually wanted to go back to one.
Oct 2010 – Feb 2019
City Administration Uster · Permanent Staff · Zürich, CH
Worked on infrastructure covering 76 Windows servers (68 virtualised in VMware) and 450 workstations, including 90 running on VMware VDI, across 15 administration sites. Contributed to the city's remote access setup (VMware Security Server, Horizon, RSA Authentication Manager) and BYOD integration, and was responsible for LAN, WAN, and WLAN across all sites alongside the wider IT team. Also handled firewall change management, delivered first and second line support, automated tasks with PowerShell, and ran an early pilot of Azure and Office 365, back when that still felt like a gamble.
"Under pressure, Stefan Bopp maintained composure and contributed significantly through calm professionalism. New topics were tackled independently, with innovative ideas driving optimal solutions."
City of Uster, February 2019Aug 2006 – Aug 2010
City Administration Uster · Federal VET (EFZ) · Zürich, CH
Four years training as a systems engineer (Informatiker EFZ, Schwerpunkt Systemtechnik), split between classroom time at BZ/GBS Uster and supervised work covering network infrastructure, system security, server administration, scripting, backup systems, and directory services. Finished with a Swiss Federal Certificate of Proficiency and a 5.0 out of 6.0, which I'm still quietly proud of.
